New Orleans Relief :: Spring Break 2008
Accomodations
Week 1-4: Groups will be staying at the Quality Inn
Q: Why are we staying at a hotel and not in a facility sponsored by a local church or relief organization?
A: We have contacted all of the remaining relief camps and
churches we know of in New Orleans and none of them are large enough to
accommodate our numbers. In addition, most of those
church-sponsored camps were unwilling to reserve beds for us, because
they need to give priority to churches from their respective
denominations. Surprisingly, the cost of staying at those camps
is only a little cheaper than staying at a hotel. In the end we
figured you would appreciate the privacy and access to personal showers
and comfortable beds a hotel can provide.
Q: Why don’t we build our own relief camp?
A: We have learned from our experience two years ago that
building our own camp facility is not as cheap as it sounds. We
would have to hire plumbers and electricians to get the facility ready.
We would have to rent cots, port-a-potties and shower trailers in
addition to thinking about safety and security. So after
considering the great complexity of building our own camp and the risks
associated with it, we felt like a hotel option made the most
sense. Hotels are businesses that specialize in figuring out how
to most affordably house people for short term stays.
